Frequently asked questions

You'll have many questions when considering bringing a new puppy into your home. Here, I've gathered the most common inquiries. If you don't find your answer here, please don't hesitate to contact me!

How Much does a Sweet Pea Doodle cost?

Prices for 2026 are currently £2500 per puppy. This price reflects the costs, time and care involved in breeding quality, healthy litters of pups. ENS, ESI and other socialisation prep for puppies in addition to comprehensive health testing of parents, the day to day costs of caring for our breeding dogs to the highest standards which includes high quality dog food, regular vet health checks and routine vaccinations, all add up.

What activities do Goldendoodles like?

Goldendoodles are highly trainable and athletic. This means there are many things you could do with them! They are well suited to agility, any kind of obedience training and can be trained to work as gundogs and retrievers. If you love hiking or running and can't find another person that wants to go out in all weathers, a Goldendoodle will be happy to do accompany you!

What makes a Sweet Pea puppy unique?

At Sweet Pea Doodles, not only do we comprehensively health test and DNA screen our parent dogs, all our puppies undergo ENS, ESI and other socialisation training which we believe is vital to preparing them for the world beyond their cosy life with Mum and their litter mates.

When you buy a Sweet Pea Doodle your pup will already have had the foundations laid for crate training, grooming and potty training which will make continuing their learning journey in a new environment so much easier.

Sweet Pea Doodles also has a relationship with David at Pupmeister, who specializes in puppy and teen dog training. You will get a free consultation with David who can answer all your questions if you are a new owner or someone who already owns dogs but might like a refresher on newer training techniques.

And last, but not least, Sweet Pea Doodles provides all new owners with a Puppy Pack that includes toys, chews, grooming tools and advice on health, feeding and training tips. And if we haven't covered everything, we are always here to help with any issues or questions you may have.

What you need to know about Goldendoodles before you buy one

Goldendoodles like active households, preferably with another dog if you have to leave them for short periods. They are sociable, like to play when they are young and be part of what's going on, whether that's you doing some gardening, going for a walk, going to the pub or walking around town. They typically need around one to two hours of exercise each day, with at least half an hour off lead to run freely—something that’s important for both their physical health and mental wellbeing.

They’re not usually destructive and can cope with being left alone for short periods, often showing less separation anxiety than some other doodle types. However, they aren’t dogs that should be left alone all day while you’re at work. Very few dogs cope well with this and Goldendoodles are no exception.

What should I consider before buying a Sweet Pea puppy?

Bringing any puppy into your home requires a significant time commitment. At Sweet Pea Doodles, we make efforts that not all breeders do to ensure puppies go to the right homes. We do not want buyers making a mistake that could have been avoided by asking a few relevant questions to ensure that they genuinely have the time to give the dog for training, exercising and socialising them. Most dogs that end up in rehoming centres are there because breeders did not screen their buyers who in turn underestimated the commitments or chose the wrong dog for them. Please do not be offended, we are thinking of both you and the puppy!

Are Goldendoodles suitable for families with autistic children?

This is a very common enquiry. The answer is 'yes' and 'no'. Goldendoodle puppies are no different from any other puppy - they jump up, can play bite, need to play and chew things - all normal puppy behaviours. Goldendoodles do not come 'ready made' for families with adults or children that have special needs, they require training and socialising just like any other puppy. However, it is true to some extent that Goldendoodles are generally quite laid back, with steady temperaments which, once trained, make them suitable for families with autistic children or family members who have special needs and want a dog that is very tuned in to them, and easily handled. Goldendoodles are highly trainable which makes socialising them relatively easy and they are naturally obedient and like to please. Training and socialising are key - no breed of puppy comes ready to fit in with families that have special requirements or needs to consider.

Are Goldendoodles more likely to have genetic health conditions because they are cross-breeds?

No. It is a myth that cross-bred dogs have worse health. In fact, the opposite is usually true. When you breed dogs from different gene pools (breeds), there is a larger variation in genes and their alleles to pass on to pups which means less chance of them inheriting the same copy of a faulty gene from each parent - many purebred dogs come from smaller generations pools and therefore more likely to have the same copies of genes - including harmful recessive traits. Hybrid vigour is most prominent in first generation crosses - F1 - but careful selection of parents in future generations of litters as well as crucial health and DNA screening means a quality cross-bred dog will be as healthy a dog as you can breed.

Are Goldendoodles hypoallergenic?

There are no breeds of dog that are truly hypoallergenic. Allergies are triggered by the proteins in their dander (dead skin cells), saliva and urine - all of which every dog produces regardless of coat type.

However, Goldendoodles are more allergy-friendly than many other breeds because they shed less. The lowest shedding Goldendoodle generations are those with higher percentages of Poodle in them - F1Bs, F1BBs - this is the best generation for allergy sufferers. F1s (50/50 mix) do still shed moderately and F2 generations (crosses between Goldendoodles) can vary widely and are a bit pot luck with coat type.

How much grooming do Goldendoodles require?

As a professional groomer and owner of multiple types of doodle, I can confidently say that all Goldendoodles need grooming (bathing and clipping) by a professional groomer.  If you do not commit to this, you will end up with a matted coat that will have to be shaved off which is very unattractive. F1 Goldendoodles (50/50 Poodle and Golden Retriever) typically have wavy, soft, loose coats and are more likely to shed though not as much as a retriever and are usually groomed every 8-12 weeks depending on the coat. F1B and F1BB generations that have more poodle in them are typically more likely to have coarser, curlier coats. They usually require groom every 6-8 weeks. These coats shed and smell a lot less, but are more likely to matt. If you commit to a Goldendoodle, you need to be able to commit to regular grooming!

What if I have a problem with my puppy?

Sweet Pea Doodles are committed to helping owners with their puppies. Where possible and reasonable, problems that arise which affect an owners ability to look after their puppy or dog, we will do our will best to help. Generally speaking, we do not accept returns or refunds simply because we have our own dogs to consider but will help with rehoming if it is necessary, or help with problems you may be having with behaviour or training. We will asses a situation as it arises and do our best to find a solution for you and your puppy/dog. We do always ask that if you are having problems, that you contact Sweet Pea Doodles in the first instance to help you try to resolve issues and discuss options - we really don't want a dog or puppy to end up either in a shelter or being inappropriately rehomed.
