What does 'health screening' mean for Sweet Pea Doodles?
Full health screening is essential as a responsible breeder. It eliminates, as far as is possible, dogs inheriting or developing costly medical and often life-limiting conditions. We carry out all recommended breed-related tests using specialist vets and also use comprehensive DNA screening in our parent dogs that identifies inherited disorders, including drug sensitivities, metabolic issues, and degenerative diseases.
How does Sweet Pea Doodles ensure their dogs are healthy before breeding?
Certain tests cannot be carried out until a dog is fully grown around the age of 1 yr. At that time, we conduct BVA Eye Testing, where expert veterinary ophthalmologists examine for hereditary eye conditions, covering both congenital and late-onset diseases. We also perform Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Testing, which involves radiography to assess joint health and screen for dysplasia. The Embark Comprehensive Dog DNA Test developed with Cornell University, analyses over 230+ genetic health risks with >99% accuracy, providing in-depth and actionable health insights.
Breed Related Health Issues
The following are the specific breed related Health conditions that we test for:
Golden Retrievers: Hip and elbow dysplasia (joint disorder) PRA1&2 (Progressive Retinol Atrophy - degenerative and progressive blindness); Gonioscopy (predisposition for Glaucoma). ICH1&2 (Ichthyosis is a genetic skin condition that causes scaling and dandruff); DM (Degenerative Myelopathy is a disease of the spinal cord). DNA screening also identifies other conditions a dog may be at risk from.
Poodles: PRA-prcd/rcd4 (Progressive Retinol Atrophy; vWD type 1&2 (Von Willebrands disease is a blood clotting disorder); Hip and elbow dysplasia; DM (Degenerative Myelopathy).
Crossbred dogs require all the above. All health certificates can be viewed.
What specific health tests does the Embark DNA test include?
The Embark DNA test screens for 230+ genetic health risks, including MDR1 drug sensitivity and degenerative myelopathy. It also offers trait analysis, explaining physical traits such as coat colour, shedding, and body size.
Why is health screening so important for puppies and their new families?
It is crucial for responsible breeders like Sweet Pea Doodles to ensure that puppies inherit the best possible health, reducing the risk of costly and life-limiting conditions. It provides peace of mind for new families, knowing their puppy has a solid foundation for a healthy life.
